Mobile Email Service for Life with Peek Pronto Messenger
September 28, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Get Mobile Email Service for Life with Peek Pronto Messenger
Even though things don’t always work out quite the way you expect them to work out, convergence devices seem to be the way that we are heading. Our cell phones can play music, take pictures, and surf the web. Even so, there is still a certain appeal to standalone devices and that’s what Peek is trying to offer you.

The Peek Pronto isn’t a new device, but Peek is offering a rather scary-sounding deal for people obsessed with mobile email access. Rather than buying the Peek handheld and then paying for each month of service as you go along, you can instead pay one flat fee in the beginning and get email for life. Or at least as long as the Peek service stays up and running.

The newest deal attempting to sway people in Peek’s direction is $300. For that one-time price (presumably plus tax), you get your hands on a Peek Pronto and lifetime service. You never have to pay a monthly fee again. If you’d prefer something a little cheaper, they also have a $229 deal for one year of service and a Peek Pronto.

Keep in mind that the regular price charged by Peek for its mobile email service is $20 a month. If you take the lifetime plan for $300, even if you assume the handheld is free, you earn your money back in just 15 months. Then again, you might prefer having your smartphone for email. I know I do.

Betting on the Ponies with Your Fingers
September 28, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Growing up, I accompanied my dad to the horse track on more than one occasion. It’s not that he was a heavy gambler or anything like that, but he did like to play the ponies. I’d get a slice of pizza, tell him who I thought was going to win, and I’d have a wager by proxy. Now I can have the same experience in the palm of my hand.

One of the newest “games” to hit the Apple App Store is Virtual Horse Racing 3D. Even if you don’t have the opportunity to hit up the race track yourself, you can get in on this so-called sport of kings through your iPhone or iPod touch. This app isn’t about racing the horses as much as it is about betting on them (with virtual money, of course).

Placing bets through the touchscreen interface seems to be fairly straightforward, allowing for different kinds of wagers and that kind of thing. After you’re satisfied with your virtual betting slips, you let the race begin and cheer on your favorite virtual jockey to the finish line. At least the animations are cool.

You can find out more about Virtual Horse Racing 3D in the App Store or you can hit up the developers for more info and feedback.

Apple iPhone Comes to China Unicom This Week

Apple iPhone Comes to China Unicom This Week
Now we have another version to circle October 1st on our calendars. Speaking for myself, I’m pretty excited about the start of the NHL regular season, but the people of China have another reason to celebrate. It’s on that day that the Apple iPhone will be making its official debut through China Unicom.

Yes, I realize that the iPhone was initially released in the United States over two years ago and we are already well engulfed in the generation of the iPhone 3GS, but this has been a very long time coming for China. Yes, I also realize that they could have retrieved a unit through the grey market, but this will be the first time that China Unicom has the ability to sell the phone officially.

That’s the good news, so go ahead and mark October 1st on your calendar if you happen to want an iPhone in China. The bad news, however, is that the iPhone is going to chime in at quite the premium compared to most other markets around the world.

It’s a little ironic, really, seeing how many of the components and manufacturing are done in and around China. In any case, China Unicom is set to offer the Apple iPhone for 5,000 yuan. That works out to over $700! You’ll also get to choose from eight different monthly plans, ranging from 126 yuan to 886 yuan ($18 to $130).

Get a Netbook with Any Windows 7 Version You Want
September 28, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Get a Netbook with Any Windows 7 Version You WantSeveral months ago, Microsoft made a formal announcement saying that it would restrict what version of Windows 7 could be installed on certain computers. In addition to the minimum specs required for each version of Windows 7, Microsoft also defined the maximum specs allowed. Well, that has now changed.

Initially, it seemed that the vast majority of netbooks would only be able to install Windows 7 Starter Edition. If the OEMs chose to make a netbook that was more powerful, they would then have to upgrade to more robust (and more expensive) version of Windows 7. This way, the OEMs would not be able to “cheap out” with Starter Edition across the board.

Thankfully, Microsoft has now lifted this restriction. A spokesperson from Microsoft UK says that the OEMs and ODMs “have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook. Starter is an entry version and doesn’t have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn’t there anymore.”

The long and the short of it is that assuming the computer means the minimium requirement, it can come pre-installed with any version of Windows 7 when it launches later this year. You can save money with the Starter Edition or you can get more features with the other versions. Consumer choice from Microsoft. Imagine that.

iLuv i1166 Portable Media Player Launches Next Month
September 28, 2009 at 4:17 pm

We all know that the iPod family, with the noted exception of the shuffle, is capable of playing video content. However, even when you step up to the bigger screen of an iPod touch or iPhone, the display still isn’t really big enough to enjoy longer movies and television shows. Enter the iLuv i1166 to address this very concern, especially for frequent travelers.

The iLuv i1166 isn’t completely groundbreaking in scope, since iLuv has already released similar products in the past, but this portable multimedia player is a great option for watching movies on the go. That’s because iLuv has stepped it up to a 9-inch widescreen digital TFT LCD display, making for a perfect size to watch videos on an airplane, bus, or car ride.

The i1166 will accept any contemporary iPod and the Apple device will actually be housed inside of the iLuv player, eliminating the need for messy cables and other attachments. The iPod will also charge up inside the i1166 if you have the player plugged in via the provided AC adapter.

In addition to iPod compatibility, the iLuv i1166 also has a spot for regular CDs and DVDs, including the data-only versions with DiVx video, MP3 files, and so on. Rounding out the specs are USB expansion, SD/MMC expansion, full subtitle management, and fast motion playback.

The iLuv i1166 portable digital multimedia player will ship in mid-October for $269.99.
