REVIEW – Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer
October 5, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Whether you’re living in a college dorm and you want to keep tabs on all of your belongings or you’re working in an office where your stapler always seems to go inexplicably missing from your desk, having a good label maker can go a long way. This is also useful for when you have multiple seemingly similar items and you want an easy to differentiate between them.

Going well beyond the basic traditional label makers is the Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer. Instead of working as a standalone product with very little customization, the QL-570 works just like a regular printer that you’d connect to your computer. While it may not be quite as convenient as the handheld equivalent, you get many more features and options with this package.

REVIEW - Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer

Inside the box, you get the Brother Label Printer itself, a USB cable, a power cable, the supporting documentation, a cleaning sheet, installation CD, and a pair of starter rolls of thermal paper. The QL-570 doesn’t use any ink, relying instead on this thermal paper. After it prints your label, you can peel off the backing and use the sticker-style label immediately.

Retailing for just over $60, the Brother QL-570 is quite affordable, especially since it comes with two rolls of DK thermal paper. The wider roll is a continuous strip of label paper measuring 58mm across and the narrower roll offers several consecutive address labels.

REVIEW - Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer

Measuring 20.8 x 13.5 x 14.2 cm, this Professional Label Printer offers up to 300 x 600 dpi resolution, speeds of up to 68 labels per minute, compatibility for both PC and Mac, and included software to create all sorts of labels. The P-touch Label Creation software is good for making shipping labels, name badges, folder labels, and more.

While the handheld label makers will only output a single line of text in only one font style and size, the Brother QL-570 acts just like a normal inkjet or laser printer. You can print images, albeit only in black and white, as well as all kinds of text.

REVIEW - Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer

Setup and configuration is very easy and I really like the design for slotting in the thermal paper. On the right side of the roll, you’ll see a vertical wedge that fits perfectly into a slot in the printer. The left side fits into a series of slots closer to the front of the printer too, so it doesn’t matter if you have the size that spans the width of the printer or you’re using a narrower version.

Looking at the build quality of this printer, you won’t get anything that resembles anything near the top of the line. The plastic can feel quite cheap, but it’s not like you need this device to be particularly rugged. You also have to realize that it’s only a $60 product.

REVIEW - Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer

The print quality is a little hit or miss. Since it uses thermal paper, there is no time needed for the ink to dry. There’s no ink. This also makes for a remarkably smooth and clean surface for your labels. Text comes out quite crisp and you can use whatever fonts you’d like. The software allows for integration with Word, Excel, and Outlook as well.

Images can be printed, either on their own or as background images to text, but they do only come in grayscale. I wouldn’t want to use a photo that has too much detail to it, but this kind of functionality is good for basic pictures and company logos.

All in all, I’m quite pleased with the Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer. The setup process is easy, the footprint is small enough to fit on nearly any desk, and the software is very robust. The auto-cut feature when you print out a label is very handy too. I wish there was a way to use it without a computer though.

OVERALL RATING: 8.0/10

Light Up a Hotspot with Wi-Fi Seeker and Light
October 5, 2009 at 4:33 pm

One of the major reasons why you may opt for a notebook over a desktop is for the added portability that it can provide. However, most of us can be pretty useless if we are without Internet access, so you’ll want a quick and easy way to check for the availability of interwebz where you are.

I guess you could whip out your laptop, turn it on, and let it do the search for wireless networks, but that’s an unnecessarily cumbersome way of doing it. Instead, you may want to consider the generic Wi-Fi Seeker and Light.

This car remote-sized device offers two features, as you can probably tell. Hit one of the buttons and the single LED flashlight will turn on to light your path. Hit the other button and it will show you the signal strength of any Wi-Fi network in the area.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that this handy little remote will not tell you the SSID of said network, nor will it tell you if the network is password-protected in some way. It also won’t tell you if the network is for internal purposes only or if it opens up to the world wide web.

Yeah, I guess it can be pretty handy, but I think I’ll stick to my WiFi-enabled smartphone for scanning instead.

HTC Tilt 2 and HTC PURE Announced by AT&T
October 5, 2009 at 4:09 pm

HTC Tilt 2 and HTC PURE Announced by AT&TWe knew that these two phones would soon be sharing shelf space with the iPhone 3GS, but it’s still good to get a formal announcement one way or another. AT&T has come forward to officially reveal the HTC PURE and the HTC Tilt 2, both of which will come preloaded with Windows Mobile 6.5.

If you’re thinking that these two phones look eerily similar to something that you may have seen through another carrier, your impressions are mostly correct. The HTC PURE is the AT&T variant on the HTC Touch Diamond2 and the HTC Tilt 2 (also known as the AT&T Tilt 2) is their take on the HTC Touch Pro2.

The HTC PURE and the Tilt 2 will both come with full support for the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, so you will have the opportunity to browse, buy, and enjoy a range of applications on these phones. I’d imagine a handful of games, a Twitter client or two, and a Facebook app will be among the first out the chute. AT&T customers can choose to have their Marketplace purchases show up on their regular monthly bills.

The HTC PURE gets a 3.2-inch WVGA touchscreen, 5MP autofocus camera, expandable memory, gravity sensor, and an ambient light sensor. Expect to pay $150 with contract and mail-in rebate.

For the HTC Tilt2, you get a 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, HTC StraightTalk, and a 3.2-megapixel camera, aswell as the TouchFLO 3D experience. Look for the Tilt2 to run for $300 with a two-year agreement and $50 mail-in rebate.

Apple iPhone Gets Invaded by Derek Jeter's Baseball
October 5, 2009 at 4:07 pm

Apple iPhone Gets Invaded by Derek Jeter's BaseballI’m more inclined to watch hockey or football myself, but there are a lot of people who love nothing more than watching America’s favorite pastime. Baseball is huge, so Gameloft has come forward with a valuable license on the iPhone to offer Derek Jeter Real Baseball.

The Apple iPhone has quickly become just as viable a mobile gaming platform as the Nintendo DSi and Sony PSPgo, especially since the iPhone had the App Store idea well before existence of DSiWare or PSP Minis. With this baseball app, you can swing for the fences with Derek Jeter.

With Derek Jeter Real Baseball, you get what could be one of the best looking baseball simulations available on the iPhone today. The characters are rendered in three dimensions and the stadiums offer a good sense of depth as well. Audio commentary and fan reactions round out the pacakge.

It’s not quite available through the App Store just yet, but expect Real Baseball to hit up the online marketplace some time this month. Swing away, round the bases, and live out your dreams on the diamond.
